public opinion debate

How come this is acceptable
and
this
is
not?
I am not a prude by any means, but it seems to me the outfit that Miley Cyrus is wearing at this AMFAR Fund raiser is incredibly inappropriate and pretty close to cheesy porn......
(And Miley is not alone in this fashion statement)
Rihanna came in a close second in the cheesy department?
Is this how we, as women, want to be defined?
I thought we had moved on from all this......
Boy, was I
Wrong!

On the other hand.....
A mother breast feeding her baby is a very beautiful and natural thing to see in my humble opinion......

Is my "age" showing?

I think we are now in 'The Hand Basket', just about ready to take off for Hell!

What are your thoughts about all this?

More To Come........

I could not agree more. When women (and girls masquerading as women) wear outfits like these, they just ask for derision and disrespect, in my opinion. These two will do anything, apparently, for notoriety.

That is a powerful post and isn't it strange that breastfeeding moms have to fight for the right in some parts of the country but yet "couture" grants exposure rights. I'm reading a great book titled DIVIDE and I'm reminded of many exceptions we accept.

No, you're age is not showing, Naomi. I feel similar re this; and I'm sure you and I are not alone.

Some of these so-called "stars/celebrity" think to dress like a hooker from the low end of town is the way to gain fans. I guess it works if those are the kind of fans they're aiming at...if you know what I mean.

I'm not a prude, either...but I do have a demarcation line. Vulgarity, crudity and grotty dress and behaviour are on one side...the opposite side to where I wish to be.

Take good care. :)

I totally agree with you!

Cheesy porn sums it up.

I think those "outfits" are OK for those who like to objectify, which you can't really do with a woman and her baby.

I feel the same way. I've signed a FB petition because they kept removing pictures of mothers breastfeeding but allowed all sorts of sexually explicit and demeaning shots of half-clothed women and didn't consider that bad. FB finally gave in. I don't understand the public displays of half-nakedness. Are they saying I can do what I want, or I am a sex object for male approval? I fear we're turning the clock back on woman's rights and position in society.

I totally agree with the "porn" but that's what they seem to be selling rather than their talent...

honestly I don't care to see a mother breast feeding either..I just feel it's a "bonding/ closeness" best kept private. But that's just me.

If the hooker look is in, I am out, way out. The Miley Cyrus types really annoy but then there is hope when Taylor Swift shows not only talent but class and take home all the awards. Guess hooker fans don't vote where it counts.
Great point how breast feeding is frowned upon and "hooker" gets front page. Sigh.

This is an important post that leads us to reflection, Naomi. A mother breast feeding her baby is natural, lovely and beautiful to see for sure. It's an expression of love and care. I will search to know if in Brazil there is a law that rule about the right of the mother feeding her baby on public.
I'm not a prude too, but I do have a demarcation line between what is nature and what is vulgarity. Well written post, dear Naomi.

I was so happy to see your comment on my new post about Halloween Scenes!! You've been on my mind lately because I know you'll appreciate when I tell you that my Cable Provider finally got the wax out of their ears and put TCM back on my cable plan!! I am beyond happy about this, I hadn't had TCM for at least 8 years. The wonderful black and whites movies; fabulous stars, intriguing movies, B Horror movies (funny!) and Mr. Osgood doing the hosting and this new (to me) host, don't know his name yet, but he is good, too. No breaking in for commercials, only showing the TCM Movie Shop commercial in between movies. Refreshing, mesmerizing watching...missed this!!

Now, about your post: Ha, Miley Cyrus should have used black Duck Tape for that outfit and had to tear it off...wouldn't be such a great idea then, huh?!
TCM just showed the first Tarzan movies, before censorship, when Margaret Sullivan swam in the nude...beautifully filmed, the female figure, not as "hooker" but as a work of art.

Mother quietly breast-feeding her child can be a work of art. Suppose Marilyn Monroe had been able to have a baby and then breast fed publicly. What a hue and cry there would have been then, too, I dare say!!

Times are always changing, back and forth and forth and back!!

Again, so good to see you in the bloggy world again, even though, like me, I'm sure your energy is still limited.

Take good care.

So nice to see you are still here.

Good taste is timeless. The dominatrix outfit says nothing nice about the wearer- the young lady's costume is an honest representation of her character.

I believe we give up our privacy too easily. Breast feeding should be a an act of bonding rather than showing off. A towel over the shoulder shielding the feeding from full public view is most appropriate.

I agree totally and when you put the photos together like that it is all the more glaring. I think there is a fine line now between a stripper and fashion. I thought Beyonce's performance at the Grammys was good but very much like a strip show. It's all about titillation and who can do it the most. And these women set trends, sadly. Young girls are watching.

PS I'd rather see them pose nude and get it over with, as well as make some art out of it, rather than wear these cheesy stripper outfits.

Miley wants to shock and frankly not look sexy or pretty. She didn't in that picture. I sometimes wonder if she does it all as a joke. I also wonder what she will be like if she ever quits doing things because of what others don't like and figures out what she wants. I also think breastfeeding is beautiful and nothing wrong with it in public.

had this to say:

I'm not sure why Rihanna or Miley feel its necessary to wear outfits like this. Both women are talented and pretty, they are successful, they don't need to shock anymore, so why do it? It's not actually sexy at all. A little bit more left to the imagination is more appealing anyway. It seems to me that they just need to try and shock more and more, and now it just all looks a bit tired and old.

I agree with you. Cheesy porn! Yuck!

I do have strong feelings about breast feeding.
Having trained as a Sick Children's Nurse from aged 16 to 21 I saw what a beneficial effect breast feeding had on babies and was determined to do the same for my children. It is a very precious time for both mother and child and whenever possible IMO should be in a quiet peaceful environment. Never mind modesty or whether it bothers other people it is what is best for the child that is important. They can so easily be distracted and so it makes sense to find a quiet spot. Personally I wouldn't dream of inflicting the very private process on others. Maybe is isn't always possible to have privacy but a little discretion doesn't go amiss I think.

I remember back in the day Cher dressing a little racy, but it was more outrageous and entertaining. Miley would look much sexier with a hint of skin showing. This Diva S & M outfit she's wearing brings her down a notch and she has incredible talent; she does not need to draw this kind of attention to herself.

Monday, November 10, 2014 at 4:17:00 AM PST

had this to say:

I think the difference is that while most people will never see Miley, many in Iowa might run into a breastfeeding mother at Walmart, and men run the world, they want to sexualized women, not be reminded that breasts were not made for their pleasure.
So a celebrity exposing herself is OK, but the other--no no. It is sexist, ignorant, and cruel.that is what I think.

Hello, Naomi, this is a message for you and not necessarily meant for posting on your blog (although I loved this post). My name is Brad and I visit your Huckleberry Hill Farm (The French Manor) in the Poconos twice a year to help run their murder mystery weekends. It is much fun and brings many old friends together again and again. Would it be possible to get your email address? This past weekend I brought my metal detector to the Manor and made one very interesting find (a ring). I'd like to find out if you know of anyone ever losing a ring there, as I want to learn more about it. From the depth it was buried and the style, I think it is very old and could date back to your family's time there. I was thrilled to read your posts about the farm and to see the family pictures. My email address is anchorbc@aol.com. I hope you are well and I want you to know how beautiful and warm your farm continues to be for those of us who go there frequently. Sending you all my best wishes... -Brad

I had not seen the two outfits you showed – they certainly look very tasteless. It shows that with these women, being famous does not equate with being refined, but being a tad vulgar. I always heard that for a woman to be sexy she should not expose herself but let imagination work. As for hiding breastfeeding woman, this has always surprised me in this country. What about eating everything “organic” and going back to more natural ways? I always think it is strange that you can watch people being shot on TV and even more violence but a woman’s breast while feeding an infant is taboo. American culture does have some peculiar characteristics.

Oh Naomi you are indeed spot on with this post. Those outfits are tasteless beyond measure. do they really think they look attractive? I think I am getting old but I look at them and this of one word, tragic. I do not get Miley Cyrus at all. What is she trying to prove.

Those two young girls make themselves look cheap, they think they are sexy but they are not... The young mother breast feeding needs to throw a receiving blanket over herself also... At home is one thing, in the middle of church is another...
