somewhere, over the rainbow

So this is what I saw as I looked out at my view late Friday afternoon...This is a semi close-view of the rainbow that was half obscurred by clouds and mist.....(Do click on all these images to see them bigger.....)

Here below is a view of that whole downtown area, plus some of the area to the south east of Downtown....you can just see a bit of that rainbow but the whole panorama is pretty dramatic, to me...And like all Rainbows, it kept changing because of the constant moment-to-moment changes in the weather pattern....But here below, is a closer look at the always magical....The whole sky on Friday was magical, as it seems to be so often when we have a rainstorm....and we finally had a bit of a rainstorm....We are still over eleven inches behind what is normal----well, normal by this time of the year, that is----and that is how little rain we have had....

It's always very very dramatic from my windows....always fascinating....and always different, from one rain to the next, and from one moment to the next, as I said, too..... I love that being able to see as much as I can of 'the basin', as it is called, I can see where it is sunny, and where it is very cloudy and dark, too...So moving slightly west of the picture above, we have this long distance view of this huge sprawling city on this side of the hill....And then below, moving the camera further west we now are looking right at the ocean.... And moving in closer so you can actually see the ocean better, here below is that view..... That is the ocean out there, and if you look carefully in the upper left quarter of this picture, you will see a plane that has just taken off from LAX....

And then...moving over further West...the panorama of what I see every day. And this is how that looked on Friday And there is my favorite mountain with those wonderful favorite trees of mine, too....And below, a closer look at those wonderful trees with the very beautiful sky behind them.... And below....a few hours later...the sky had changed, once again...Of course, it had been changing all through the afternoon, but I missed many of those changes because I was busy...But here below, one of those changes that I caught with my camera..... I just love these trees. They say so much to me...they evoke so many feelings in me...I think they are beautiful and haunting and lonely and magnificent...they are "art". They are living sculptures that sit on that hill and remind me of something ancient....something I cannot quite put my finger on...but something that has great meaning for me, everytime I see them.... This picture above was taken about 7:15pm that night....Haunting in that light....But haunting in a wonderful memorable way.....

More To Come.....

Note: I just noticed tonight that I have reached and past my 300th post...(With this post I am at 311!) Who would have thought.....? Certainly not me. Perhaps I should write up another 100 things about me...I believe I did that at 200 and quite frankly, I don't think I could possibly come up with a third hundred....! But I didn't want this milestone to pass without acknowledging it here on my blog.

I did enjoy that Naomi! I love that word basin - on a much much smaller scale it could be applied to here. We live on a hill and the town is in a basin with the sea(Bristol Channnel)in the distance. Alas no mountains but buzzards circle overhead.
Your trees are really beautiful, delicate, lace like. They remind me of a painting by Corot. No wonder you love them. I think we are both very fortunate to live in such interesting places.
Congratulations on 300plus. It is always a pleasure to visit here.

What beautiful pictures :-)

We have just heard that our reservoirs are over half full, so that means that we may escape a 'hose-pipe' ban this year - gotta love that most English of bans!

My arm is ok, it's just really impressive bruises. There are actually two; one on the inside of my elbow and one on the inside of my wrist. Bandages yesterday, ice packs last night and lots of Germolene before bed and this morning they are a lovely indigo colour!

Michele sent me this morning to say hope you slept well :-)

You have such a wonderful view, Naomi. I tend to think of a big sky as one over open land and to see one over a sprawling city is such a contrast. I love my little corner of private paradise but I don't have a big sky and I miss the expansive feeling I get looking out on a view like that.

I love the rainbow! And I can't believe I'm at something like 700 posts. Does it just go on and on?

Yay for you! I am SO glad you are in this little blogging world. I enjoy coming here so much. And those views! Oh my! How magical, indeed. I haven't seen a rainbow in eons. Maybe because we get our moisture in the form of snow. I wish they had snowbows. =)

Raindbows are certainly magical...and a beautiful gift from G-d and nature, I think. (that's why we're supposed to say a blessing upon seeing one!)
Thanks for sharing your L.A. landscape -- with all its facets -- with us on the other side of the continent.

Apparently you weren't too far from the pot of gold on Friday...LOL. As you were taking those pics, my daughter was in LAX, awaiting her plane to Australia. I sure wish I could have gone with her. We would have had a small layover, so I could come and meet you!

I love the virtual travelling I do by visiting blogs... I posted this explanation on my blog but I thought I would post it here too in case you don't get back:
Orienteering is kind of like a car rally on foot - a cross country running (or walking) event which involves map reading to navigate around a series of controls. Here in New Zealand it is very family oriented with courses for all ages and abilities, I do the "short red" which is technically hard but physically not so hard (but hard enough for me!). Children start out by following paths and fences mostly, once you get off the paths it gets more difficult.

You are so lucky to have such a magical view from your house. I love that you can see the city - I have always wanted a house with a view of the city skyline (even a tiny one!!) - somehow I think you'd just feel more 'connected' to everything iykwim. The first rainbow shot is just magnificent!!

311 posts. You go girl, lol!!!! Congrats, it is a milestone!

Love the pictures!! That rainbow is so pretty, but they always are. You have such a dramatic view from your perch on the hill there!! It's awesome indeed. Love how the colors of the clouds change. It's like you are up there close to them!!

Now I see I've confused you by my explanation - forget about the car rally if you don't know what it is :)
In orienteering, you have a map marked with the start and finish and a series of numbered circles. You have to visit the places marked by circles, in order. At each of these there is a flag with a clipper - that's the "control". At each clipper you clip your punch card to prove you went there. Eventually you get to the finish, having punched your card at each numbered control point. The courses are graded with colours according to difficulty. White is the easiest to navigate, red is the hardest. (Yellow and orange in between). As it's about navigation, everyone starts at a different time, so you don't follow each other, and your time is recorded when you finish - whoever completes the course in the fastest time is the winner. I hope that's clearer!
In New Zealand there are 1600 members of the National Association, but lots of people have tried it in school etc without joining. In the US there are only about a tenth as many members, on a population basis, so it's not surprising that lots of people haven't heard of it (I imagine it wouldn't work too well in the midwest, you need varied terrain with gullies, small hills etc)

I just love those trees of yours too - especially in the the last photograph where they are silhouetted against the evening sky. The other pics of the rainy sky are fanatastic. It's quite a panarama of natural drama!

Thanks my dear Naomi for your visit and lovely words about my city and my husband's pictures! When I see all those photos I miss the big city so much...

The small red building with a name running down the side is a Pizza Restaurant. And Piolin is the name of a very known clown in the São Paulo's city.

I will come back soon to see your currently post. So long my dear.

I love the rainbow, how gorgeous! I had to take Stephen to the airport at 5AM and never got back to nap until after noon and now I am totally confused. He is on his flight back to Vienna as I type. It was a great visit but now I am behind in the reading and comments and seeing all the gorgeous pictures...

These are terrific!

You know, as I've commented before, you give such a great storytelling with your excellent picures. Flowers, people, sunsets, nature... Excellent.

With my humble camera, I do hope readers got a kind of impression what this Monday afternoon was like from our Winterhomes Balcony, in Oslo, Norway.

This sunset is ok with my present camera:
