Have just finished watching the talk by Sir Ken Robinson (what an entertaining man he is!!) and couldn't agree more with the points he raises. Interestingly enough, this was the focus on education of the course I did in primary teaching - ie that we should educate children for their whole being, not just with an academic focus in mind. I think many of the university courses now have a huge emphasis on helping children to learn in a myriad of different ways ie not just visually via reading, but through art, music, through role-play, discussion, debate, or whatever it may be. I know a lot of graduate teachers move into the workplace with this philosphy in mind, but many of the schools are still run with an 'old school' (read: academic) focus in place, and I think it will take some time before this shifts. But it is shifting, and it needs to do!
One of the main reasons we chose to enrol Holly in a private school is so that she has the opportunity to follow whatever talents/interests she may have, whether they be academic, sporting, artistic, whatever. That is so important to us as parents, because in the end, the *purpose* of education - for us anyway - is to live as full a life as possible!!
I particularly enjoyed hearing the story about the little girl who couldn't sit still - went on to dance classes and be one of the most respected/talented dancers in history - which she certainly wouldn't have been if she'd been 'medicated' for having ADD.

Creativity is so important. Where would we be without it? No books, no films or poetry, man would still be on the ground, problems would remain unsolved and no wheel even! The list is endless. It is certainly something to be nurtured adn not surpressed.
